Bronxville
Bronxville is a town of Eastchester; New York located about 15 miles north of Manhattan.
The earliest settlers of Bronxville arrived the early 18th century, among them being the Underhill and Morgan families. The Abijah Morgan House, which still stands, is one of the oldest homes built in Bronxville. The population explosion in New York City during the 19th century made Westchester's villages and hamlets look very attractive. Offering more space and quick commute into Grand Central via the New York and Harlem Railroad brought families up north. Factories became a major industry in Bronxville until 1922.
Alexander Masterton and his family had a huge influence on the development of Bronxville. A stonecutter, Masterton moved to Bronxville because of the amounts of fine white marble discovered in Tuckahoe. He built a neo-classical wooden home in 1835 called Ridgecroft which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The home remained in the family until 1959. He was the first of many prominent architects to design Bronxville homes.
After opening a grocery store, building several roads and opening two public schools Bronxville was incorporated in 1898 with Francis Bacon its first Village President. Bacon held the first meeting of the Village of Trustees in his home. His services were voluntary, as are the services of current Mayor Mary C. Marvin and current Trustees William H. Barton, Jr., Glenn D. Bellitto, Anne W. Poorman and Robert S. Underhill.
Bronxville's Four Corners was mainly formed from Bronxville's second Mayor Frank Chambers and his generosity. Today the civic center is where Bronxville's Four Corners used to be. Lawrence Park was formed from the 1890 purchase of Prescott farm by William Van Duzer Lawrence. The plot of land was then formed with his vision into a romantic community with drew prominence and early celebrity. Important writers moved into Lawrence Park including many female writers such as Alice Wellington Rollins, Kate Douglas Wiggin, Ruth McInery Stuart and Elizabeth Custer. Several artists like William H. Howe and Otto Bacher soon followed.
The quality and standard of architectural design established in the early 20th century still holds true in modern Bronxville. Its elegant homes are all within walking distance of each other and a short 28 minutes from the heart of Manhattan.
