Brooklyn Heights
Brooklyn Heights, originally named ‘Brooklyn Village’, is an important part of the Brooklyn borough. The neighborhood is bound by Old Fulton Street, Atlantic Avenue, Court Street, Cadman Plaza and the East River. The neighborhood was the first neighborhood protected by the 1965 Landmarks Preservation Law of New York City. The Lenape Native Americans called this area Ihpetonga or “the high sandy bank” while illustrates its start on top of a bluff that rises sharply from the river’s edge and recedes gradually on the landward side.
When a ferry service was offered by the 19th century, Brooklyn Heights became the first commuter town of New York. Later, the executive offices of the Brooklyn Dodgers were in Brooklyn Heights and there is a plaque on the building where Jackie Robinson signed his major league contract.
