Buchanan
The village of Buchanan is located in the Town of Cortlandt, in Westchester County, New York.
The Kitchawonke Indians originally inhabited the area that became the Village of Buckanan. In 1683 Stephanus VanCortlandt purchased the 1000 acres from the Kitchawonke and passed the land on to Philip Verplanck. In 1836 the land was sold for real estate development. By 1860 a tannery was opened by a Mr. Strang and a Mr. White.
Mr. Strang and Mr. White’s tannery produced patent leather from sheepskins for shoes and leather for carriages and wagons. Alexander Buchanan purchased the tannery in 1872 and expanded it into an oilcloth. Alexander’s four sons developed this original tannery into one of the largest oilcloth plants in the country. Their plant, the Standard Coated Products, employed almost 400 people. The Westchester Industrial Complex is currently on the site where Mr. Strang and Mr. White’s original tannery stood.
The name of the village changed several times from East Haverstraw, to Centerville and finally Buchanan after George Buchanan the village’s first postmaster. The village was officially created on July 19, 1928. At this time land in Buchanan was owned an operated by the Hudson River Day Line and was known as Indian Point Park, a popular park featuring a swimming pool, dance pavilion, rides and a picnic area.
The village of Buchanan is currently run by Mayor Sean Murray, Deputy Mayor Theresa Knickerbocker, and Trustees: Richard A. Funchion, Brian J. Smith and Nicolas Zachary. The village of Buchanan is served by the Hendrick Hudson School District who “is committed to providing an excellent education for all of our students” offering a complete comprehensive program of honors and A.P. courses. The schools include: Blue Mountain High School, Buchanan-Verplanck Elementary School, Frank G. Lindsey Elementary School, Furnace Woods Elementary School and Hendrick Hudson High School.
