Cortlandt

The Town of Cortlandt is located in the northwestern corner of Westchester County, bound by the Hudson River and Putnam County. The town got its name from the Van Cortlandt family who moved to the area in 1677 and began purchasing land in and around the area.

Under the Township Act, Cortlandt became one of 20 townships in Westchester Country with Philip Van Cortlandt as the first Supervisor. The town remained predominantly rural throughout the late 19th and 20th centuries with seasonal bungalows for New York City residents. The Federal housing network of the 1950’s led to the suburbanization of the Town, along with the rest of New York State.

The Town of Cortlandt is currently governed by Supervisor Linda D. Puglisi with Board Members: Richard Becker, Francis X. Farrell, Ann Lindau and John E. Sloan.

The Bear Mountain Toll House is one of Cortlandt’s treasures. The Toll House opened in 2002 and is unique in that it operates as a toll booth and a home. The Toll House is at the opening of Bear Mountain Bridge, which opened for traffic on November 27, 1924 and was the first bridge to span the Hudson River between Albany and New York City. The Harriman Family built it after creating the Bear Mountain Hudson River Company. The company also constructed Bear Mountain Road. In 1940 the Bear Mountain Bridge and Road were sold to New York State. The home is currently used as a Tourist Information and Welcome Center and is on one of the most scenic roads in the area.

The Town of Cortlandt is served by the Hendrick Hudson School District which includes: Blue Mountain Middle School, Buchanan-Verplanck Elementary School, Frank G. Lindsey Elementary School, Furnace Woods Elementary School and Hendrick Hudson High School. The Town of Cortlandt also includes the villages of Buchanan and Croton-on-Hudson.
