East Elmhurst

East Elmhurst is located in the northwest borough of Queens in the city of New York. The neighborhood is part of Queens Community Board 3, which also serves the neighborhoods of Jackson Heights and North Corona. Grace V. Lawrence is the Chair of Community Board 3 along with Giovanna Reid as the District Manager. The neighborhood was developed in 1905 and played an important role during the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s. East Elmhurst was the home to civil rights leaders such as: Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Willie Mays.

At one time the neighborhood was mostly a beach and recreational space, then developed into a housing community with tree lines streets and one, two and three family homes. The East Elmhurst Library Branch opened for business in June of 1912 and was then known as the Louona Park Library.
