East Hampton
East Hampton is a town in the southeastern Suffolk County, New York. It is the easternmost town in the state of New York and the first English settlement in the state of New York.
The original peoples of East Hampton came from varying cultures including the Algonquian-speaking groups including the Montaukett, the Paquot, the Narragansett and people of the Lenape nation. In the late-17th century Chief Wyandanch negotiated with English colonists for the sale of the East Hampton land. The first land sale was made to English colonist Lion Gardiner in exchange for a large black dog, Dutch blankets and "some powder and shot." Over the next several decades, the population of the Montaukett significantly decreased due to fatalities due to smallpox, which the English and Dutch introduced to the United States, and dispersion. The few that remained in the area were forced into auction by Arthur W. Benson and then moved to Freetown, a free people of color established community on the northern edge of East Hampton Village. Montauk County Park was named in honor of this group of people.
East Hampton was primarily agricultural in the early days. Due to a frequent number of beached whales along the South shore of the town made it a whaling capital. Soon, proper handling had to be written down into town laws. Sag Harbor was the launching point of several important voyages, the most famous being the expeditions of Mercator Cooper. Montauk is still New York's largest fishing port and East Hampton continues to have a huge maritime presence.
Two first ladies grew up here, Julia Gardiner Tyler wife to President John Tyler and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis wife to President John F. Kennedy. East Hampton has also been known for its artist colony with artists like Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Mark Rothko, Franz Kline, Ian Hornak, Andy Warhol and Thomas Moran. Andy Warhol's collaborator Paul Morrissey had a huge waterfront estate in Montauk called Eothen in which they housed many guests including Jacqueline Onassis, the Rolling Stones, Bianca Jagger, Jerry Hall, Liza Minnelli, Elizabeth Taylor and John Lennon. The Andy Warhol Foundation donated 15.6 acres of its land to the in 1993 to the Nature Conservatory.
Local schools include East Hampton High School, Pierson Middle-High School and the Ross School.
