Elmsford

In the early 1700s Elsmford was known as Storm’s Bridge and as Hall’s Corner during the mid-19th century. Its present name was adopted in 1870 and inspired by an elm tree that stood about thirty feet in circumference. In the early 1700s Abraham Storm built a tavern in central Elmsford, which became a meeting place for French and Colonial officers. The tavern’s name was O’Briens and its barmaid would garnish drinks with tail feathers of chickens, thus bore the name “cocktail”.

In the 1800s, Elmsford was not much more than a small hamlet with a church, a school, a store, and some farms. With the arrival of the railroad and station, New Yorkers moved to Elmsford and expanded its population. This population growth culminated Elmford’s incorporation in 1910. An Elmsford resident operated the first radio station in the county WRW and several buildings around Elmsford were important meeting places during the American Revolutionary War.
