Fordham
Fordham is a neighborhood in the west of the Bronx bound by Fordham Road, Webster Avenue, East 183rd Street and Jerome Avenue.
The neighborhood’s origins date back to 1751 when the estate Fordham Manor was built. Most of the manor and estate now is part of Fordham University’s property including the Rose Hill Campus and the Edgar Allan Poe house. Fordham was a critical passing point during the American Revolution for Den George Washington, connecting the Continental Army’s retreat towards White Plains.
By the construction of the White Plain Line and a small station, Fordham grew. Local farmers were now able to ship goods to the growing New York City and ship ice to the village. The area remained rural until about 1900 with the expansion of New York City.
Edgar Allen Poe lived in Old Fordham Village with his wife Virginia in a cottage at Kingsbridge Road and the Grand Concourse from 1846 to 1849. Edgar Allen Poe wrote “Annabel Lee”, “Ulalume” and “The Bells”.
Fordham University, a private not-for-profit research university, is located in the Fordham Village. The university was founded in 1841 as St. John’s College and the first Catholic institution of higher education in the northeastern United States. By 1908 Fordham University was established. The Jerome Park Racetrack housed races such as the Belmont Stakes, Champagne Stakes and the Ladies Handicap. The Westchester Polo Club was founded at the Jerome Park Racetrack. The track closed on October 4, 1894 to make way for the Jerome Park Reservoir.
