Freeport
Freeport Village began in the 1640s as an oystering community and a popular New York City theater community resort. Today it is a mainly a commuter suburb with a lot of shoreline industry. The Incorporated Village of Freeport is a village in the Town of Hempstead with its own municipal electric utility, police department, fire, electric and water departments. Freeport also has a station on the Long Island Rail Road. Freeport is governed by a mayor, deputy mayor and a board of trustees. The current mayor is Andrew Hardwick.
A distinctive feature of Freeport is its several canals that flow into the Atlantic Ocean. The area was originally named Raynortown after Edward Raynor a herdsman who moved to the area in 1659 and built a cabin on top of land he cleared. John J.
