Garden City
Garden City was founded by millionaire Alexander Turney Stewart in 1869 and is a village in the Town of Hempstead. The name also includes the unincorporated areas of the region like Garden City South, Garden City Park and East Garden City. The famed take off of Charles Lindbergh was in a former airfield in East Garden City. The village was created to offer an upscale community outside of New York City. The Garden City Hotel, designed by McKim, Mead, and White, was its main attraction. Today many of its original Victorian homes still stand.
In the early days of Garden City, the neighboring Hempstead helped to bring a great deal of industry and population to Garden City keeping it afloat.
