Fleetwood Concourse Village
Fleetwood Concourse Village is a neighborhood located in the South Bronx bound by the Cross-Bronx Expressway, Webster Avenue, East 149th Street and Jerome Avenue. The name comes from the thoroughfare Grand Concourse.
Apartment buildings were built in Concourse Village in the 1920s and 1930s. The neighborhood was a predominantly Jewish population until the 1960s and 1970s. Today the population is predominantly Hispanic and African-American. There are eighteen public and two private schools including the Urban Science Academy, the William H. Taft High School and Cardinal Hayes High School.
The Bronx Museum of the Arts is located in Fleetwood Concourse Village. The Bronx Museum was founded in 1971 and focuses on 20th-century and contemporary art with a focus on the cultural diversity of the Bronx and the greater New York metropolitan area. The building’s design came from Arquitectonics, who was awarded the “Excellence in Design” prize by The Art Commission of the City of New York in 2003 for The Bronx Museum. Its permanent collection consists of 20th and 21st century artists of African, Asian and Latin American ancestry. The Museum also offers several outreach programs for young artists including the smARTpower program, whose applications are now open.
The Museum has been an effort to rejuvenate this once crime stricken area, which is still pulling itself from despair. Another effort has been the Pregones Theater located between 149th and 150th Streets. Pregones Theater is a leader in Latino producing and presenting arts organizations in America. Pregones is dedicated to creating vital work for the low and moderate income of the Bronx residents and beyond.
Most famous of attractions in Concourse Village is the Yankee Stadium. Built in 1923, the Stadium has environed such legendary players as Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio and Yogi Berra of the New York Yankees and is one of the most famous venues in the United States.
