Hastings on the Hudson

Hastings-on-Hudson is located in the southwest part of the Town of Greenburgh and lies on U.S. Route 9. Hastings is a suburb of New York City.

The Weckquaesgeek Native Americans used to live in the area which became Hastings. The Weckquaesgeeks fished, swam and collected oyster and clamshells used to make wampum. They also planted corn and tobacco. By the 1960s Dutch carpenter Frederick Philipse traded for the area and built his manor in the area and divided the land between the Dutch, English and French Huguenot settlers. During the American Revolution Hastings-on-Hudson was neutral territory and soon Philipse's land was bought by James DeClark, Jacobus Dyckman, George Fisher and tavern keeper Peter Post. At this time Westchester County was being divided into towns and Hastings became part of the town of Greenburgh. The village was officially incorporated in 1879.
