Hempstead
Hempstead is one of the few neighborhoods in Long Island with a flourishing African American and Latino community. Hempstead was formed in 1643 when Robert Fordham and John Carmen met with Tackapousha, the chief of the Marsapeague and spokesperson for the Mericock, Matinecock and Rekoewake tribes and bought the land from the natives to form the new community. By the spring of 1644 families were leaving Stamford forHempstead. By May 6, 1853 Hempstead was the first incorporated community in Queens.
Hempstead's population soon grew, with its St. George's Church receiving a silver communion service from Queen Anne of England, George Washington came through here during the American Revolutionary War, Eleanor Roosevelt spent her summers here as a child, Peter Cooper lived in Hempstead and Charles A. Lindbergh spent a lot of time in the community. In the 19th century important families like the Vanderbilts and the Belmonts built their homes in Hempstead making it the center of Long Island society. Soon Hempstead became the center of trade and commerce making it the shopping center and "hub" of Nassau County. It is now the most populous village in New York State.
