Islip
Islip is on the south shore of Long Island. Its geographical diversity is one of Islip's strong points. The suburban town is encompassing ocean beaches, bays, Lake Ronkonkoma, forest fields, canals, historic villages and ponds.
Before the town of Islip was founded the Algonquin Indians lived in Long Island. The Secatogues, a sub-division of the Algonquins lived in the area that became the Town of Islip. William Nicoll purchased land from Sachem (Chief) Winnequaheagh of Cennetquot and became the first patentee of Islip. He named his 50,000-acre plantation Islip Grange after his hometown Islip, England. Other early land patentees were Andrew Gibb, John Mowbray, Stephanis Van Cortlandt and Richard and Thomas Willets. The district of Islip was established in 1720 and an election for a supervisor, constable, collector and two assessors were held.
Islip's proximity to the Atlantic Ocean made fishing a way of life. The "Oyster King" of the century Jacob Ockers worked from Islip. By 1900, his company the Blue Point Oyster Company shipped 100,000 barrels of oysters a year all over the world. The industry employees 500 boats and 1,100 men locally, oyster shells were even used to pave town streets until 1915. The town's expansion came slowly but by the 1920s the town had several mansions owned by several wealthy men of New York City, Dowling College, St. Mark's Episcopal Church and the first Fire Island Lighthouse. Today Islip is primarily a "bedroom community" with a thriving population.
Islip is governed by a town supervisor and four council members. The current Town of Islip Supervisor is Phil Nolan with Council Members Steven J. Flotteron, John N. Edwards, Gene Parrington and Trish Bergin Weichbrodt.
Islip has eleven school districts, ten libraries, eleven beaches, four movie theaters, two hospitals and major employers include Creative Bath, Quality King Distributors, Dayton T. Brown, Inc., EDO Corporation and Symbol Technologies.
