Larchmont

Larchmont is a village within the town of Mamaroneck in Westchester County. The village is located on the shore of the Long Island Sound, eighteen miles from Midtown Manhattan. The village is served by the New Haven Line of the Metro-North Railroad. The area was originally inhabited by the Siwanoy, an Algonquian tribe. In 1614 the Dutch discovered the area and by 1720 there were very few Siwanoy left in the area.

Peter Jay Munro, adopted son of the first Chief of Justice of the United State Supreme Court John Jay, built one of the first mansions in Larchmont. The "Manor House" is one of the oldest and most historic homes. John Jay was the founder of the New York Manumission Society, an organization founded in 1785 to promote the abolition of slavery of African descents within the state of New York. Munro was also heavily involved in this Society and the Abolitionist movement along with Alexander Hamilton. The row of larch trees behind this home gave the village its name. The Village of Larchmont was incorporated in 1891.
