Lawrence
The Village of Lawrence is part of the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County and one of the "Five Towns" along with Cedarhurst, Woodmere, Inwood and "The Hewletts". Early Lawrence is also referred to Old Lawrence and consists of many mansions which were former plantations, some mansions dating back to the American Revolution. One of the finest and oldest mansions is Rock Hall, home to the Martins and the Hewletts which has been converted into a museum. The Village of Lawrence was incorporated on September 13, 1897.
Old Lawrence is often referred to by historians as the "First Hamptons" because during the second half of the 19th century it was a main vacation spot for the rich families until the 1890s. The decline of activity was due to a series of hurricanes and nor'easters which changed the coastline and destroyed a large beachfront hotel. At this same time, Lawrence started to become more like a suburb and by the 1940s Lawrence started to become a center of Reform and Conservative Jewish life, changing its strictly White Anglo-Saxon Protestant demographic to something more gentrified. Two notable moments in history was the acquisition of the Village Golf Course in 1938 and the wetland preservation and purchase of Hicks Beach in 1952.
Notable residents who grew up in Lawrence include actress Peggy Lipton, designer Steve Madden, musician Leslie West, Rabbi Israel Singer, designer Donna Karan, criminal defense attorney Benjamin Brafman and editor of Tablet Magazine Alana Newhouse.
The current mayor of Lawrence is Martin Oliner with Deputy Mayor Joel A. Mael. The trustees of the Village of Lawrence include Edward I. Klar, Michael A. Fragin and C. Simon Felder. Monthly meetings of the Mayor and Board are held ever 2nd Thursday of every month. Lawrence is served by the Long Island Rail Road, the MTA Long Island Bus and is connected to Atlantic Beach.
