New Rochelle
French Protestant refugees, or Huguenots settled New Rochelle in 1688. Many of these refugees came from the French city La Rochelle, which is how New Rochelle got its name. Thirty-three families originally established the community and their names could be found on a monument in Hudson Park. New Rochelle is the most successful of the Huguenot settlements in America, attracting French refugees as late as 1760. French was spoken in New Rochelle and many families of surrounding towns sent their children to New Rochelle to learn to speak and write French.
