North Castle

North Castle is a town in Westchester County located thirty five miles from New York City. It contains the hamlets: North White Plains, Armonk and Banksville. North Castle is a balance between historic charm and controlled expansion.

The original inhabitants of North Castle were the Algonkian-speaking group the Siwanoys, who belonged to the Wappinger Confederacy. Several of early sachem names remain in North Castle in places like Wampus Pond and stream, the Mianus Gorge and River, the village of Kensico and Coman Hill School. In 1701 people from Massachusetts and Connecticut settled in the eastern portion of North Castle with the Middle Patent from King William III of England. The name North Castle comes from a Siwanoy encampment then called “North Fort”.

The first Town Meeting was held on April 6, 1736 and the Town of North Castle was incorporated on March 7, 1788. Throughout the American Revolution the Town of North Castle remained neutral and aided during the Battle of White Plains when General Washington hid his men high in North Castle’s hills. Smith’s Tavern, an early stagecoach stop, now serves as the headquarters for the North Castle Historical Society and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Other buildings in North Castle listed on the National Register include the Elijah Miller House and the Bedford Road Historic District.
