Riverhead

The Town of Riverhead was created in 1792 when it was divided from the Southhold, New York by the New York State Legislature. Southold was purchased from the Alonquin tribe in 1649 with an additional portion purchased from Col. William Smith which was then divided amongst settlers. On March 13, 1792 the Legislature passed a bill splitting off this section of land and named it River Head. River Head's first town meeting was scheduled to be held April 3, 1792. River Head was named the county seat and by 1902 its two word name became one and its population had reached 2,500.
