Shelter Island
Shelter Island was named after the sheltering affect its neighboring island Gardiner's provides. Soon after its early settlers from England bought the island from the Manhanset Indians and the settlers built mansions on the island. After several of the homes were built, prominent Quakers across the county were being prosecuted throughout the colonies. One of the wealthy settlers, Nathaniel Sylvester, offered his home as a refuge. By 1673 Nathaniel owned the entire island.
After Nathaniel Sylvester died, the island was divided between his five sons, two of which gained complete control. Over the next couple of years sections were sold to neighboring towns and the town of Shelter Island was incorporated in 1730 with William Nicol II as its first supervisor. By 1790 other families arrived to the island like Boisseau, Clark, Griffing and Harley. By the 1890s roads were built which provided public access to Crescent Beach.
Shelter Island Heights started in 1871 as a summer resort which attracted a group of Brooklyn businessmen who purchased the Frederick Chase estate. There were several homes built in classic American styles like Stick-Eastlake, Queen Anne Style and Colonial Revival and between 1872 and 1880 70 summer cottages were built. The well defined district has not changed much since 1890. The twentieth century brought many more millionaires who bought land and built estates. By the time the Depression hit, summer cottages were abandoned and left to whither. Not until after World War II did residents return to Shelter Island. Many current residents of Shelter Island have family roots dating back to pre-Revolutionary War.
Notable residents include author Faith Baldwin, American sculptor John Chamberlain, director of Barney's Simon Doonan, writer and photographer Douglas Kent Hall, financier Otto Kahn, actress Julie Kavner and Isreali-born violinist Itzhak Perlman.
Shelter Island is run by a supervisor and council members. Currently Shelter Island is run by Supervisor James Dougherty and Council Members Edward Brown, Christine N. Lewis, Peter S. Reich and Glenn Waddington.
