Sleepy Hollow is a village in the Town of Mount Pleasant located on the eastern bank of the Hudson River. The village was originally known as North Tarrytown and changed its name in 1996 in honor of the Washington Irving story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”
Originally, the village was an agricultural district, then a manufacturing center, then an affluent neighborhood for wealthy businessmen from Manhattan. Some millionaires attracted to Sleepy Hollow include: Anson Phelps, Ambrose Kingsland and John D. Rockefeller, all of whom built mansions in the village. The first inhabitants of the village were the Weckquaesgeck Indians who lost the land to the Dutch in 1643.
The famous Sleepy Hollow Cemetery provides Cemetery Tours, a revival of its natural burial grounds and is the final resting place of figures like Washington Irving, Andrew Carnegie, Walter Chrysler and Elizabeth Arden.
The village of Sleep Hollow is currently governed by Mayor Ken Wray with Trustees: Tom Capossela, Bruce Campbell, Barbara Carr, David Schroaedel, Evelyn Stupel and Karin Wompa. The village is served by the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns including the John Paulding School, W.L. Morse School, Washington Irving School, Sleepy Hollow Middle School and Sleepy Hollow High School. The Sleepy Hollow High School’s mission is “to work with our community and business partners to maintain the highest standards of learning. Together we will provide students with the opportunity, knowledge and resources to meet our complex world.”
Points of interest in the village of Sleepy Hollow include the: Philipsburg Manor House, Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow, Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Rockefeller State Park Preserve, 1883 Lighthouse, Kingsland Point Park, Philips Manor Beach Club, Patriot’s Park and the Hudson Valley Writer’s Center.
