Southold
Southold is a town in the northeastern tip of Suffolk County, settled in 1640 by English Puritans from New Haven, Connecticut who were looking to establish the town as a theocracy. The Puritans bought the land from the Corchaug of the Lenape tribe and did not allow other churches to operate in Southold. Reverend John Youngs and Peter Hallock led the families of Barnabas Horton, John Budd, John Conklin, William Wells, John Tuthill, Thomas Mapes, Richard Terry, Matthias Corwin, Robert Akerly, Zachariah Corey and Isaac Arnold. New Haven supervised Southold until 1662 and it was under the Connecticut Colony until 1674.
Rev. Joshua Hobart was installed as Southold's second minister in 1674 after New York went under English rule. Rev. Joshua Hobart was the brother of Josiah Hobart, one of Southold's earliest settlers and an initial trustee of East Hampton, Long Island. Rev.
