White Plains

White Plains is a city and the county seat of Westchester County, New York. Presumably, White Plains got its name from the groves of white balsam that covered the area or the heavy mist that hovered over the swamplands near the Bronx River. Neither idea can be proved but both are local rumors. The Quarropas, members of the Mohican nation, used the land for farmland until a party of Connecticut Puritans settled the area in 1683. A Royal Patent for White Plains was not granted until 1721. By 1758 the city of White Plains became the seat of Westchester County.
