Whitestone
Whitestone�s East River view and isolation is one of the neighborhood�s best features. Whitestone is a residential neighborhood in the northernmost part of Queens. The neighborhood apparently got its name from a large offshore rock. The White Stone Chapel was built in its honor and erected by townsman Samuel Leggett in 1837.
The area was mostly part of the Francis Lewis estate in the early days. Francis Lewis was a delegate to the Continental Congress and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. His home was burnt to the ground and his wife captured during the American Revolutionary War. The area was originally named Clintonville after Dewitt Clinton, a former governor of New York. Mr. Clinton was also largely responsible for building the Erie Canal.
In 1939 the Bronx Whitestone Bridge was built, measuring 2,300 feet and was the fourth longest bridge in the world at the time of its construction. The bridge crosses the East River and connects Queens to the Bronx. Othmar Ammann, a Swiss-American structural engineer, built the bridge.
