Woodhaven is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens. Woodhaven is a very suburban feeling neighborhood, boasting more trees than any other neighborhood in Queens. The neighborhood was originally called Woodville and changed its name when residents petitioned for a local post office in the mid-19th century.
When Woodhaven was first settled in the mid-18th century, European settlers used the land for farming. Early families included the Ditmars, Lotts, Wyckoffs, Suydams and the Snedikers. By the middle of the 19th century two major racetracks were built; the Union Course and the Centerville. Both racetracks were extremely popular at the time and drew in a great deal of tourism to the area. In 1863 two Frenchmen began a major manufacturing launch in Woodhaven and opened a tin factory and improving the process of tin stamping. The first engineered lighting system for night baseball games was installed in Dexter Park in 1930. Dexter Park is in Woodhaven just east of Franklin K. Lane High School.
