Brookhaven

The first residents of the Town of Brookhaven were the Algonkian-speaking Native Americans, the Setauket and the Unkechaug tribes. The people of Seatclott and the Unkechaugs designated boundaries which are still used today. Six English settlers arrived to the area in 1655 and purchased eight square miles of land stretching from Stony Brook to Port Jefferson in exchange for tools, wampum, lead, powder and a pair of children's stockings. The area was then named Setauket after the Native American tribe. By 1666 Governor Richard Nicolls granted a Patent for the town which allowed for a confirmed title and further purchases. By 1686 Governor Thomas Dongan issued a Patent which granted powers to the town and established a representative form of government. The town was re-named Brookhaven and the official town seal contains a "D" in honor of Governor Dongan.

Brookhaven is led by a Town Supervisor and a six-member Town Council which are all two-year term elected positions. The members are elected by the district.
