Huntington

On April 2, 1653 a parcel of land was bought by Richard Holbrook, Robert Williams and Daniel Whitehead known as "the First Purchase" which then became the area for Huntington. The town was then founded in 1653 on the north shore of Long Island in the northwestern part of Suffolk County. The earliest form of government in Huntington was the Town Meeting. The Town Meeting provided an opportunity to listen to the needs of the town in co ordinance with its officials. This led to building a schoolhouse in 1660 with Jonas Smith as the first schoolmaster.
